Herpes Infection – How It Spreads
So, how do you catch herpes? As mentioned, herpes is highly contagious, and it’s important to be careful not to infect others. Oral herpes (cold sores on the lips) is especially contagious because the virus can even be transferred via shared objects.
What does that mean?
If you use a lipstick and then pass it to someone else to use, that person has a good chance of getting infected. The same goes for sharing a cigarette—if you’re a carrier and someone else smokes it after you, the virus can be transmitted easily.
There is a high percentage of carriers in Israel, but most do not show symptoms and are not contagious. Only in some people does the virus reactivate, making it contagious to others.
Types of Herpes
- Shingles (Herpes Zoster) – A form of chickenpox reactivation. The exact cause is unknown, but it’s believed to be triggered by a weakened immune system.
- Genital Herpes – Caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-2), this form affects the genital area.
- Herpes Zoster – This is the medical name for shingles, caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV).
- Herpes Simplex – The virus responsible for most herpes infections, appearing on the lips, genitals, and other areas.
How to Treat Herpes
So what medications are available for herpes? We already know it’s unpleasant and certainly not aesthetic, so it needs to be treated. First, it’s important to know how to prevent spreading it to others.
If you’re infected:
- Avoid kissing
- Don’t share personal items (cups, straws, makeup, etc.)
- In restaurants, use separate utensils or serve individual portions
- If smoking hookah (nargila), use a personal mouthpiece or a separate one for yourself
There isn’t exactly a “fast” cure for herpes, but antiviral medications can help. A common treatment is Zovirax (acyclovir), which comes in ointment or pill form.
For severe outbreaks, ointments may not be enough, and oral tablets are effective only if taken within 48 hours of the first symptoms.
For people prone to herpes (e.g., women preparing for cosmetic treatments), treatment should begin as early as possible, including frequent application of ointment.
Treatment for Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
- Steroids can help reduce sharp pain and promote healing of the rash.
- Antiviral drugs (like acyclovir or valacyclovir) can shorten the duration of the illness.
- Supportive care is key: the doctor should explain how to care for the skin, avoid infection, and manage symptoms.
